geoDefense

by Critical Thought Games

GeoDefense is a pretty standard Tower Defense game, set above by its graphic quality. This TD app is beautiful graphically. It is one of the best, if not the best, TD game for iPhone that has been released. As far as game play elements, this game is pretty standard. Some creeps are weak vs. certain towers, upgrade your towers as the creeps get stronger as levels progress.

When I first played I wondered, "What are the x1, x5, x10 things that show up," but these increase your bonus multiplier. Here is how the bonus multiplier in geoDefense works: Each creep you kill is worth 1 point times your current multiplier. The multiplier is shown in the center top fo the screen. Your multiplier goes up by 1 for each creep you kill normally, but if you kill a creep near the exit it will go up more. So if you see x5, then that means your bonus multiplier just went up by 5. So the next kill is worth 5 times as much as before in points. Killing a creep really near the exit, like at the last possible moment, is worth a big multiplier bonus. So this might cause you to change your strategy in tower placement once you are keen on getting a really high score.

GeoDefense was named #8 in PCWorld's 10 iPhone Games You CANT Live Without!

Note: If you're wondering what the Vortex towers do, the developers made a handy video explanation. It is the video on the right.

Fieldrunners

by Subatomic Studios, LLC

Like most tower defense games, the concept of Fieldrunners is for enemies to spawn at one end of the map in order to reach the other end of the map. Unlike many TD apps / Tower Defense games available on the iPhone, in Fieldrunners you the player is allowed to create the path for the creeps using the towers, instead of having to build along a predestined path. The player starts with 10 seconds to prepare and build with a meager sum of coins. More coins are gained through killing creeps, which allows for more towers and further upgrades.

One of the Tower Defense apps for iPhone, Fieldrunners is probably most well known for its lavish graphics. Individual enemies are discernible, and towers also have their own distinguishable characteristics, down to different ammunition graphic.

Fieldrunners has four base tower types: Gatling, Goo, Lightning, and Missle. Each tower plays an important role and may be upgraded three times. Upgrading towers is very important because it allows your tower to do more damage which is needed because enemies become harder to kill as you move through the game. Some enemies are able to fly, so build your path accordingly! They will fly right over your towers and head straight to the exit.

Fieldrunners is one of the easies Tower Defense apps for the iPhone / iPop Touch. The developers made the controls easy for anyone to play. To place a tower down in Fieldrunners, you simply select it’s icon, then drag it to your desired spot and let go. To upgrade or sell your tower, just select one of your towers and the icon for both selling and upgrading your tower appears. Moving around the map is also easy, just swipe your finger on the surface your the iPhone / iPod Touch. Fieldrunners is definitely one of the easy TD games to get used to.

Fieldrunners recently won 3rd place for best Android Strategy Game!

Besiegement

by Just Kissed Games

Unlike the common two types of TD, one where creeps come down a predetermined path and you set your towers aside the path; in the second you actually make the path with your towers to funnel the creeps, Besiegement is both! The graphics aren't anything to brag about, but with 30 levels and two difficulties, there is plenty of replay and this is one game that is fun to master. This game is fast becoming one of the most well know Tower Defense games, among top tier games like Fieldrunners and TapDefense,  although it has not been updated in almost three years.  Theres 8 towers, each tower has 6 upgrades. One of my favorite features is the 5 different game speeds that Besiegement offers. I love to be able to speed the game up and then slow it down when I need to build quickly during a run. For experience Tower Defense gamers, this game will seem to start off very easily. Don't worry though, it picks up quickly and becomes more suitable to your selected difficulty.  I played Besiegement on my iPhone 4s, but I imagine it would be even better on the iPad simply because the larger screen helps in the later maps when things can get chaotic.
